In The Opposite, which MLB team hires George?

The story behind the answer

In “The Opposite,” the New York Yankees hire George Costanza.

George gets the opportunity after deciding to reverse his usual instincts and behavior. He meets Victoria, whose uncle helps arrange an interview with the Yankees. During the interview, George does the opposite of what normally holds him back: instead of being deferential, he bluntly criticizes the team’s management and tells George Steinbrenner that the Yankees have been reduced to a laughing stock.

The confrontation unexpectedly impresses Steinbrenner, who orders that George be hired. George’s official position is assistant to the traveling secretary, a deliberately grand-sounding job that becomes one of his longest-running careers on the series.

The episode originally aired on May 19, 1994, as the fifth season finale. George’s Yankees employment continues through later episodes and gives the show recurring comic material involving Steinbrenner, the club’s front office, and George’s attempts to appear competent. The New York Mets are a common mix-up because they are also repeatedly referenced in Seinfeld, but they are not the team that hires George here.
