In the novel 'The Shining', what is the name of the Overlook Hotel's head chef?

The story behind the answer

In the novel “The Shining,” the Overlook Hotel’s head chef is Dick Hallorann. His full name is Richard “Dick” Hallorann, and he is one of the hotel’s most important allies for Danny Torrance.

Hallorann works at the Overlook in Colorado and recognizes that Danny possesses the psychic ability called “the shining.” Hallorann has the same gift, which he learned to understand through his grandmother. He explains that people who shine can communicate mentally and may perceive events or impressions hidden from ordinary senses.

Before the hotel closes for the winter, Hallorann warns Danny that the Overlook is dangerous and tells him to contact him if trouble begins. Danny later reaches Hallorann psychically, prompting the chef to return and help Danny and Wendy escape. In Stephen King’s novel, Hallorann survives the story, unlike in Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film, where Jack Torrance kills him with an axe.

That difference between book and film causes one of the character’s most common mix-ups. Hallorann is the chef in both versions, but his fate and several details of his role change substantially in the movie.
