In the myth of Pandora’s jar, what earlier gift to humans triggered Zeus’s punishment?

The story behind the answer

In the myth of Pandora’s jar, fire was the earlier gift to humans that triggered Zeus’s punishment.

Prometheus steals or obtains fire for humanity after a conflict with Zeus, depending on the version being summarized. In Hesiod’s account, Zeus responds by arranging Pandora’s creation as a punishment for mortals and for Prometheus’s defiance. Pandora’s arrival and the opening of the jar therefore belong to the same chain of events as the gift of fire.

Fire has an important symbolic role in Greek mythology. It represents technology, cooking, craft, and the boundary between humans and gods. Prometheus’s act gives mortals a power associated with divine life, while Zeus’s response introduces suffering into the human condition.

The fire episode and the jar episode are sometimes told as separate myths, but Hesiod links them closely. Prometheus is not the same figure as Epimetheus, Pandora’s recipient in the traditional story. Keeping those names separate helps distinguish the earlier theft of fire from the later arrival of Pandora.
