Hope remained inside the container after the other contents escaped in the myth of Pandora’s Box.
Hesiod’s account says that Pandora shut the vessel before Hope could leave. This detail has prompted centuries of debate: some readers view Hope as a comfort preserved for humanity, while others ask why a helpful quality was kept inside rather than released.
The Greek term commonly translated as “hope” is elpis. In ancient Greek thought, elpis could mean expectation or anticipation and was not automatically positive in every context. Modern retellings usually present it as the consolation left to humans after suffering entered the world.
The myth does not list every escaped evil in the detailed form often seen in modern books. Later authors and artists expanded the contents into diseases, grief, war, and other hardships.
