In the Monopoly board game, which company originally published the game in 1935?

The story behind the answer

Parker Brothers originally published the Monopoly board game in 1935. The company introduced the commercial version after Charles Darrow’s version of the game became successful.

Monopoly’s history is more complicated than the familiar Darrow origin story. The game developed from Elizabeth Magie’s 1904 patent for The Landlord’s Game and from related games played in the United States. Parker Brothers acquired rights connected with the game and began mass-market publication in the mid-1930s.

Hasbro later became the corporate owner of Parker Brothers and now publishes Monopoly in many markets. That later ownership can cause confusion, but Parker Brothers is the publisher associated with the game’s original 1935 commercial release. Different editions and international licenses have since appeared worldwide.
