In the Monopoly board game, the mortgage value of Boardwalk is $200.
A mortgage lets the owner raise cash from the bank by turning over the property’s title deed. The classic mortgage value is half the property’s purchase price, and Boardwalk costs $400, producing a $200 mortgage value. No rent can be collected on a mortgaged property.
To unmortgage Boardwalk, the owner pays the mortgage value plus 10 percent interest. Buildings must be sold back to the bank before a property in the group can be mortgaged, and the rules require buildings in a color group to be sold evenly.
Mortgage value is often confused with cash sale value or rent. Monopoly does not allow players to sell property directly to another player for a mandatory printed amount; negotiated trades can include money and property under the game’s trading rules.
