In the Monopoly board game, players can buy four railroads.
The four railroad spaces are Reading Railroad, Pennsylvania Railroad, B. & O. Railroad, and Short Line in the classic United States edition. Each has a purchase price of $200 and charges rent according to how many railroads the owner controls.
Owning one railroad produces $25 in rent. The rent rises to $50 for two railroads, $100 for three, and $200 for all four. Unlike street properties, railroads cannot receive houses or hotels; their value comes from collecting a set and from occupying spaces opponents may reach frequently.
The names can vary in localized editions. Reading Railroad is often retained even though the real Reading Company is no longer operating as it once did, while some editions change railroad names to fit their setting. The number of railroad spaces, however, is a defining feature of the classic Monopoly layout.
