In 'The Monk', what is the name of the protagonist?

The story behind the answer

In The Monk, what is the name of the protagonist? The protagonist is Ambrosio. Matthew Gregory Lewis's 1796 Gothic novel follows this celebrated Capuchin monk as temptation turns his apparent virtue into corruption.

Ambrosio begins as a famously admired preacher in a Madrid abbey, believed by the monks to be exceptionally devout. His self-control collapses after he becomes involved with Matilda, who is initially disguised as the monk Rosario. Ambrosio then pursues Antonia, and his lust leads to violence, murder, sorcery, and ultimately a bargain with Lucifer.

Agnes and Raymond are important characters in the novel's parallel storyline, but neither is the central protagonist. Lorenzo is also significant: he loves Antonia and helps rescue Agnes from the convent. The novel was published anonymously when Lewis was only 20 and became notorious for its explicit treatment of sexuality, religious hypocrisy, rape, incest, and supernatural evil. Its shocking content helped establish its reputation as a landmark of horror-oriented Gothic fiction.
