Hugh Laurie plays Dr. Gregory House in the medical drama House M.D.
Laurie is an English actor, musician, and comedian who became internationally known for portraying the brilliant but abrasive diagnostician. His performance combines medical confidence, sarcasm, physical pain, and addiction-related vulnerability.
Laurie originally auditioned with an American accent, and many viewers were surprised to learn that he is British. The role earned him two Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor in a Television Series—Drama, in 2006 and 2007, along with multiple Emmy nominations.
House is loosely modeled on Sherlock Holmes, and Laurie’s performance helped make the character’s deductive methods and difficult personality central to the show’s identity. Laurie also performed the series theme song, “Teardrop,” on piano in the opening sequence used in several countries.
