In House M.D., diagnostician Dr. House’s first name is Gregory.
The character’s full name is Gregory House, and he is the central physician of the series. He leads the Diagnostic Medicine department at the fictional Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital in New Jersey, where he investigates unusually difficult cases.
House is deliberately modeled partly on Sherlock Holmes. Both characters are exceptionally observant, rely on deduction, and have a close friend who helps interpret their behavior. House’s surname also echoes Holmes’s, while his first name distinguishes him from the literary detective.
The character was played by English actor Hugh Laurie throughout the show’s eight-season run. Although House is brilliant, the series frequently contrasts his diagnostic success with his abrasive manner, dependence on pain medication, and difficulty maintaining relationships.
