In 'The Marine Biologist,' what animal does George help save?

The story behind the answer

In “The Marine Biologist,” George helps save a stranded whale.

Jerry has falsely told an old acquaintance that George is a marine biologist, partly to explain George's absence from their college alumni magazine. The lie becomes dangerous when George and Diane encounter a beached whale and the crowd expects the supposed expert to help.

George approaches the animal and ultimately reaches into its blowhole, removing a golf ball lodged there. The golf ball had been hit toward the ocean by Kramer, whose earlier attempt to drive hundreds of Titleist balls from Rockaway Beach produced only one successful shot. George's rescue story becomes the episode's climactic comic set piece.

The episode originally aired on February 10, 1994, as the fourteenth episode of season five. Its celebrated whale monologue was reportedly rewritten late in production by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, and Jason Alexander's performance became one of the series' most remembered scenes.
