In "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire", in Peeta's interview with Caesar Flickerman, what does he announce?

In The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Peeta announces during his interview with Caesar Flickerman that Katniss is pregnant. The claim is a desperate piece of propaganda designed to make the Capitol audience sympathize with them and oppose the Quarter Quell.

The pregnancy is not real. Peeta and Katniss are being forced back into the arena as former victors, and Peeta uses the interview to make their possible deaths feel like the destruction of a family. His announcement turns their romantic image into an emotional weapon against President Snow’s regime.

Katniss is shocked because she did not know Peeta planned to say it. The scene also shows how public performances have become part of their survival strategy: their romance began as a way to gain sponsors, but the Capitol keeps demanding new emotional displays. Readers and viewers sometimes remember the statement as a revelation about Katniss herself, but it is specifically Peeta’s fabricated announcement. The lie heightens the stakes before the 75th Hunger Games begins.
