In the human body, which brain lobe contains the primary motor cortex?

The story behind the answer

In the human body, the primary motor cortex is located in the frontal lobe.

The primary motor cortex lies in the precentral gyrus, a strip of cerebral cortex positioned just in front of the central sulcus. It sends important commands for voluntary movement, with different regions representing different body areas. The arrangement is often illustrated as the motor homunculus, in which hands, face, and tongue receive relatively large cortical areas.

The primary motor cortex does not work alone. Premotor and supplementary motor areas help plan and organize movement, while signals descend through pathways including the corticospinal tract. The parietal lobe is more strongly associated with touch and spatial processing, the temporal lobe with hearing and memory, and the occipital lobe with vision. Most movement control is contralateral, meaning one hemisphere mainly controls the opposite side of the body.
