In the Harry Potter series, the school of witchcraft and wizardry is Hogwarts, formally called Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It is the main magical school attended by Harry Potter and many of his friends and rivals.
Hogwarts is a fictional coeducational boarding school in Scotland. Students generally begin at age eleven and study there for seven years, learning subjects such as Charms, Transfiguration, Potions, and Defense Against the Dark Arts. The school is divided into four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin.
The name Hogwarts is sometimes confused with other wizarding schools in the wider Wizarding World. Durmstrang is associated with northern Europe, Beauxbatons with France, and Ilvermorny with North America. They are separate institutions, not alternative names for Harry’s school.
Hogwarts first appears in “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” published in 1997. Its Latin motto, “Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus,” translates roughly as “Never tickle a sleeping dragon.”
