In The Green Mile, Michael Clarke Duncan plays the inmate John Coffey.
John Coffey is a death-row prisoner brought to Cold Mountain Penitentiary in the 1999 film adaptation of Stephen King’s serial novel. The character is physically imposing but gentle and frightened, creating a deliberate contrast between his appearance and his behavior. His unusual healing ability becomes central to the story.
The film is narrated through Paul Edgecomb, played by Tom Hanks, a prison officer who supervises the death-row inmates. Coffey’s relationship with Edgecomb gradually changes the guards’ understanding of the case and of the man they have been ordered to execute. The character’s name is also a wordplay detail: Coffey says it is spelled like the drink, but “not spelled the same.”
John Coffey is often mixed up with other memorable inmates and guards, especially Eduard Delacroix or Brutus Howell. Duncan’s performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
