In the Greek story of Pandora’s jar, who commanded that Pandora be created?

The story behind the answer

Zeus commanded that Pandora be created in the Greek story of Pandora’s jar.

Hesiod presents Pandora’s creation as part of Zeus’s response to Prometheus’s theft of fire for humanity. Zeus ordered the gods to make a woman whose arrival would bring a new burden to humans. Hephaestus shaped her, and other gods supplied clothing, adornment, speech, and gifts. Zeus then arranged for Pandora to be taken to Epimetheus.

This background means that Pandora’s jar is not originally an isolated tale about curiosity. It belongs to a larger sequence involving the conflict between Zeus and Prometheus, the acquisition of fire, and the consequences imposed on humans. Later retellings often emphasize Pandora’s action while reducing Zeus’s role, but in Hesiod’s account Zeus is the authority behind both her creation and the punishment she represents.
