In the Greek myth of Pandora’s container, who was Pandora’s husband?
Answer
Epimetheus
Answer
Epimetheus
In the Greek myth of Pandora’s container, Pandora’s husband was Epimetheus.
Epimetheus was a Titan associated with afterthought and hindsight. His name is often contrasted with that of his brother Prometheus, whose name is commonly interpreted as foresight. In Hesiod’s version, Prometheus warns Epimetheus not to accept gifts from Zeus, but Epimetheus nevertheless welcomes Pandora.
Pandora is presented as the first woman in the myth’s later tradition, created by the gods as part of Zeus’s punishment of humanity after Prometheus stole fire. Zeus sends her to Epimetheus with the sealed vessel, and her arrival changes the human condition.
A common mix-up identifies Prometheus as Pandora’s husband because he is the more famous figure in the surrounding story. Prometheus is her husband’s brother, not her spouse. Epimetheus and Pandora also appear in genealogical traditions as the parents of Pyrrha, who later becomes associated with the survival of humanity after the flood of Deucalion.
