In the Greek myth of Pandora’s box, which god ordered Pandora’s creation?

The story behind the answer

Zeus ordered Pandora’s creation in the Greek myth of Pandora’s box. Hesiod presents the story as part of Zeus’s response to Prometheus, who had stolen fire and given it to humanity.

In Works and Days, Zeus tells Hephaestus to fashion a woman from earth. Other gods then contribute gifts, abilities, or qualities, producing the figure named Pandora. The story therefore treats Pandora’s arrival as a divine plan rather than an accidental event.

Zeus’s punishment has several connected parts. Prometheus is punished separately, while Pandora and the container she carries bring suffering to human beings. Epimetheus, Prometheus’s brother, accepts Pandora even though he had been warned to distrust gifts from Zeus.

Later retellings often simplify the myth into a story about curiosity. Hesiod’s version is more strongly framed as a divine punishment and an explanation for why suffering exists in the human world.
