In the Greek myth of Pandora’s box, which deity gave Pandora her clothing and skill in weaving?

The story behind the answer

In the Greek myth of Pandora’s box, Athena gave Pandora her clothing and skill in weaving.

Hesiod’s account describes Pandora as assembled through contributions from several gods. Athena, the goddess strongly associated with crafts, wisdom, and warfare, supplied clothing and taught Pandora useful textile skills. These gifts helped make Pandora appear complete and admirable before she was sent to humanity.

Other gods have different roles in the story. Hephaestus fashions Pandora, while Aphrodite contributes beauty and desire. Hermes is associated with speech and a deceptive character. These separate contributions are sometimes combined in simplified retellings, which can make it seem as though one deity created every aspect of Pandora.

Athena’s role fits her broader mythology, where weaving and craftsmanship are recurring themes. The story therefore uses the gods’ familiar attributes to explain Pandora’s appearance and abilities while also presenting her arrival as a deliberate act ordered by Zeus.
