In the Greek myth of Pandora, what remains inside the jar after it is opened?

The story behind the answer

In the Greek myth of Pandora, hope remains inside the jar after it is opened. The other evils escape into the world, while hope stays behind when Pandora replaces the lid.

Hesiod’s Works and Days describes the container as a pithos, a large storage jar. The familiar English phrase “Pandora’s box” developed later, but the original Greek story does not describe a box in the modern sense.

The meaning of hope’s presence is debated. Some readers see it as a comfort retained for humanity; others note that Hesiod’s wording leaves open whether hope is a blessing kept from humans or a good remaining available to them. The myth itself clearly identifies Hope as the final occupant.

This detail is often confused with the idea that Pandora releases hope. In the traditional narrative, Hope does not escape with the evils. It remains in the jar.
