In the Greek myth behind Pandora’s Box, who stole fire for humanity?

The story behind the answer

In the Greek myth behind Pandora’s Box, Prometheus stole fire for humanity.

Prometheus was a Titan known for intelligence and foresight. In the traditional story, he took fire from the gods and gave it to mortals, enabling technology, cooking, crafts, and civilization. Zeus treated the act as a serious challenge to divine authority and responded with punishment.

Pandora’s creation is presented as part of that response. Zeus ordered the gods to make Pandora, who was sent to Prometheus’s brother Epimetheus. The two stories are therefore connected: the theft of fire leads to a punishment that introduces Pandora and the troubles associated with her container.

Prometheus and Pandora have opposite reputations in many later retellings. Prometheus is often portrayed as a benefactor of humanity, while Pandora is treated as the bearer of misfortune. Hesiod’s original presentation is more complex and more hostile to both figures than many modern heroic adaptations.
