In the Greek flood myth, whom did Pandora’s daughter Pyrrha marry?

The story behind the answer

In the Greek flood myth, Pandora’s daughter Pyrrha married Deucalion.

Deucalion is usually identified as the son of Prometheus, while Pyrrha is the daughter of Pandora and Epimetheus. Their marriage joins the two branches of a mythic family associated with humanity’s earliest generations.

When Zeus sends a flood to destroy the corrupt human race, Deucalion and Pyrrha survive in a chest after receiving warning from Prometheus. Once the waters recede, they consult the goddess Themis about repopulating the world. Her instruction to throw the bones of their mother behind them is interpreted as a command to cast stones, since Earth is the mother of all.

The stones thrown by Deucalion become men, and those thrown by Pyrrha become women. The flood account appears in later Greek sources, especially Ovid’s Metamorphoses, and should not be confused with Hesiod’s earlier account of Pandora’s jar.
