In The Gospel of Loki by Joanne Harris, what is the name of Loki’s wife?

The story behind the answer

In The Gospel of Loki by Joanne Harris, Sigyn is Loki’s wife. Harris’s 2014 novel retells major Norse myths through Loki’s first-person perspective.

Sigyn is traditionally associated with loyalty to Loki. In the punishment scene after Baldr’s death, the gods bind Loki beneath a serpent that drips venom onto his face. Sigyn holds a bowl to catch the venom, but she must leave periodically to empty it, allowing drops to fall.

Harris uses this established mythological relationship while giving Sigyn a role within a broader narrative of divine politics, rivalry, and betrayal. The novel’s framing voice is deliberately shaped by Loki’s self-justifying personality.

Sigyn should not be confused with Angrboða, who is Loki’s partner in the mythic tradition and the mother of Fenrir, Jörmungandr, and Hel. Different modern retellings emphasize these relationships in different ways.
