In 'The Giver', what is the main character's name?
Answer
Jonas
Answer
Jonas
In “The Giver,” the main character’s name is Jonas.
Jonas is a 12-year-old boy living in a community organized around strict rules, assigned occupations, and a policy called Sameness. At the Ceremony of Twelve, children receive the roles they will perform as adults. Jonas is not given an ordinary assignment: he is selected to become the next Receiver of Memory.
His training with the elderly Giver exposes him to memories of color, music, love, war, pain, and joy—experiences that Jonas’s seemingly perfect society has suppressed. As he learns more, he begins questioning whether safety and uniformity are worth the loss of freedom and genuine emotion.
A common mix-up is confusing Jonas with Asher, his close friend, or Gabriel, the infant Jonas tries to protect. The novel was written by Lois Lowry and published in 1993. It won the 1994 Newbery Medal and became the first book in Lowry’s Giver Quartet.
