In the first How to Train Your Dragon film, what is Hiccup’s dragon-training arena called?

In the first How to Train Your Dragon film, Hiccup trains dragons in the dragon training arena.

The arena is the enclosed area on Berk where young Vikings are expected to fight captured dragons. Hiccup initially enters this space as part of the island’s traditional dragon-fighting system, but he gradually changes the purpose of the training. Instead of attacking the animals, he studies their behavior and learns how to communicate with them.

The arena helps show the film’s central conflict between inherited fear and direct understanding. Hiccup’s observations of Toothless allow him to recognize that dragons are not simply mindless enemies. His discoveries eventually lead the other young Vikings to train dragons themselves, turning the arena from a combat setting into a place of cooperation.

The arena should not be confused with the later dragon sanctuary seen in How to Train Your Dragon 2. The sanctuary is Valka’s hidden refuge, while the arena is a Viking-built location on Berk in the first film.
