In the first Diablo game, what town serves as the player's main hub?

The story behind the answer

Tristram is the main hub town in the first Diablo game.

Players return to Tristram between dungeon expeditions to buy equipment, receive quests, identify items, and speak with recurring characters. The town sits above the cathedral whose increasingly dangerous levels form the game's central dungeon.

Tristram is closely associated with Diablo's atmosphere: its small population, ruined surroundings, and troubled cathedral establish the series' gothic tone. Adria the Witch, Cain the Elder, Griswold the Blacksmith, and Pepin the Healer are among the notable people encountered there.

A common mix-up is confusing Tristram with New Tristram, the larger settlement used as a hub in Diablo III. Although the later name deliberately recalls the original town, they are distinct locations in the series' world.
