In the Finnish maternity tradition, the famous government-provided package box can also serve as a newborn’s bed.

Finland’s maternity package, often called the baby box, is a state-supported collection of infant supplies. The box is delivered to eligible families and contains items such as clothing, bedding, and other essentials. Its design has made the package an internationally recognized example of social support connected with pregnancy and early parenthood.

The box is traditionally used as a simple sleeping space when fitted with the supplied mattress. That use helped popularize the image of Finnish babies sleeping in cardboard boxes, although safe-sleep guidance and current family circumstances should always be followed.

The maternity package is not a baby shower gift and does not depend on guests attending a party. It is a public benefit associated with Finland’s maternity and child-welfare system. Families may instead choose a cash maternity allowance under the applicable rules.
