In "The Finale," what Massachusetts town do the main characters land in?

The story behind the answer

In “The Finale,” the main characters make an emergency landing in Latham, Massachusetts.

Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer are flying toward Paris on NBC’s private plane when Kramer stumbles into the cockpit while trying to clear water from his ears. The pilots lose control and are forced to land in the small Massachusetts town of Latham.

While waiting for the plane to be repaired, the group witnesses a man named Howie being carjacked. Instead of helping, they make jokes and record the incident. A local officer arrests them under the episode’s fictional Good Samaritan law, leading to a trial over their criminal indifference.

“The Finale” was written by Larry David and originally broadcast on May 14, 1998. It aired as a one-hour series finale after a clip show and drew about 76 million viewers. The episode brought back many recurring characters as witnesses against the four leads. Latham is fictional within the story; it should not be confused with real Massachusetts municipalities such as Lowell, Salem, or Pittsfield.
