In the film The Silence of the Lambs, which FBI trainee interviews Hannibal Lecter?

The story behind the answer

Clarice Starling is the FBI trainee who interviews Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs.

Directed by Jonathan Demme, the 1991 film follows Starling as she seeks information from Lecter, an imprisoned psychiatrist and serial killer. She hopes his insights will help the FBI identify Buffalo Bill, a murderer who kidnaps women and removes their skin. The investigation becomes a psychological contest as Lecter demands personal information in exchange for clues.

Jodie Foster played Starling, while Anthony Hopkins played Lecter. Both performances won Academy Awards, and the film won the Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film Editing as well. It became only the third film to win all five major Academy Awards.

The film is adapted from Thomas Harris's 1988 novel of the same name. A common mix-up is assuming Lecter is the main investigator; Starling is the active FBI investigator, while Lecter functions as an incarcerated consultant and antagonist.
