In the film Quinceañera, the teenager whose pregnancy disrupts her planned celebration is Magdalena.
Emily Rios plays Magdalena, a Los Angeles teenager preparing for her quinceañera. After she becomes pregnant, her conservative family rejects her claim that she is still a virgin and sends her away. She then lives with her great-granduncle Tomas and cousin Carlos, whose own circumstances create additional family tension.
The film uses Magdalena’s situation to examine expectations surrounding religion, sexuality, family reputation, and coming of age. Her quinceañera is therefore more than a party: it becomes a measure of belonging and acceptance within her family.
The character is fictional, and the movie is not a documentary about a single real quinceañera. Released in 2006, it was written and directed by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland and received major honors at the Sundance Film Festival.
