In 'The Dead Zone', what power does Johnny Smith gain after waking from a coma?

The story behind the answer

In “The Dead Zone,” Johnny Smith gains precognitive visions after waking from a coma.

Johnny has been unconscious for nearly five years after a devastating car accident. When he awakens, doctors discover permanent damage in part of his brain, which Johnny later calls the “dead zone.” At the same time, other mental abilities appear to have become unusually active.

His visions are usually triggered by touching a person or object. They can reveal events from the past, present dangers, or possible future outcomes. The power is therefore more precise than simply “seeing the future”: Johnny receives psychic impressions connected to whatever he touches, and some information may remain inaccessible or obscured.

A common mix-up comes from the 1983 film and the television adaptation. The novel treats the dead zone as damaged brain tissue, while the film uses the term for blind spots in Johnny’s visions. Telepathy, telekinesis, and pyrokinesis are different fictional abilities and are not the defining power Johnny develops.
