In the classic Monopoly board game, owning all four railroads makes the rent $200 when another player lands on one of them.
The railroad rent schedule increases with the number of railroads owned: one railroad charges $25, two charge $50, three charge $100, and all four charge $200. This makes railroads useful because they provide income without requiring houses or hotels.
The four standard railroads are Reading Railroad, Pennsylvania Railroad, B&O Railroad, and Short Line. They are distributed around the board rather than placed together as a color property group.
The railroad title deeds do not use the house-and-hotel building system. Their rent is determined solely by how many railroad properties the owner controls. A player can also mortgage a railroad, which changes whether it contributes to the owner’s set and income.
