In the classic Monopoly board game, what is the full name of the B&O Railroad?

The story behind the answer

In the classic Monopoly board game, B&O Railroad stands for Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.

B&O Railroad is one of the four railroad properties in the standard American Monopoly edition. The other three are Reading Railroad, Pennsylvania Railroad, and Short Line. Together, these properties form the game’s railroad set and use a shared rent schedule based on how many railroads their owner controls.

The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was a real American railroad company and one of the earliest long-distance railroads in the United States. Monopoly’s property names draw heavily on real American geography, transportation, and street names, although the game board is not a literal map.

Some later editions changed railroad branding or replaced it with local equivalents. The B&O name is therefore especially associated with the classic American board rather than every international version.
