In the classic Monopoly board game, what is the cost of building a hotel on Boardwalk?

The story behind the answer

In the classic Monopoly board game, building a hotel on Boardwalk costs $200.

Boardwalk’s title deed lists a $200 building cost. That same cost applies to each house built on Boardwalk and Park Place because the two dark-blue properties form a single color group. A player must own the complete group before developing it and must build evenly across the group.

To place a hotel, the player generally first builds four houses on the property and then exchanges those four houses for one hotel, paying the same listed building cost. The hotel is not an additional fifth house that can be added while the four houses remain. The bank’s limited supply can also affect whether the exchange is possible.

The $200 building cost is easy to confuse with Boardwalk’s $400 purchase price, its $50 base rent, or its $2,000 hotel rent. All are distinct figures printed or derived from the same title deed.
