In the classic Monopoly board game, how many utility properties can players own?

The story behind the answer

Players can own two utility properties in the classic Monopoly board game.

The utilities are Electric Company and Water Works. Unlike street properties, utilities do not have colored property groups or houses and hotels. Their rent is calculated from the owner’s dice roll: owning one utility charges four times the roll, while owning both charges ten times the roll.

Utilities are purchased in the same general way as other unowned properties. If a player lands on an unowned utility and declines to buy it, the classic rules provide for an auction. Owning both utilities is therefore strategically useful because it increases the dice-roll multiplier.

Utilities are separate from the four railroad properties and the twenty-two colored street properties. Edition-specific boards can change names or artwork, but the classic American Monopoly layout contains exactly two utilities.
