In the Brothers Grimm tale “Snow White,” the huntsman brings the queen Snow White’s lungs and liver as proof she is dead.
The queen orders the huntsman to kill Snow White because her magic mirror has declared the girl more beautiful than she is. Unable to carry out the murder, he lets Snow White escape into the forest and kills a wild boar instead.
The huntsman brings the boar’s lungs and liver to the queen, who believes they belonged to Snow White. In the Grimm version, the queen then eats them, believing she has removed her rival.
This detail is often confused with later film adaptations, especially Disney’s 1937 film, which omits the queen eating the organs and changes several elements of the story. The Grimm tale continues with Snow White living with seven dwarfs.
