In the Brothers Grimm collection, which tale features a girl named Briar Rose?
Answer
Sleeping Beauty
Answer
Sleeping Beauty
In the Brothers Grimm collection, the tale featuring a girl named Briar Rose is “Sleeping Beauty.”
The Grimm version is titled “Dornröschen,” commonly translated as “Little Briar Rose.” A king and queen have a daughter, and a prophecy says she will prick herself on a spindle and die or fall into a deep sleep. The king attempts to prevent the prophecy by ordering all spindles removed from the kingdom.
On her fifteenth birthday, the princess discovers an old woman spinning in a tower. She touches the spindle and falls asleep, followed by the rest of the castle. A hedge of thorns grows around the palace and remains until a prince reaches it after many years.
The Grimm tale differs from Charles Perrault’s “The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood” and from later stage and film adaptations. In the Grimms’ story, the sleeping princess is explicitly called Briar Rose in many English translations, while the title itself refers to the small briar hedge surrounding the castle.
