In the Broadway musical The Lion King, Simba’s father is named Mufasa.
Mufasa is the wise king of the Pride Lands and the father of the young lion Simba. His death during the wildebeest stampede is the musical’s major turning point, after which Simba leaves home and later returns to challenge Scar.
The stage musical is based on Disney’s 1994 animated film and opened on Broadway in 1997. Julie Taymor directed the original production and designed its distinctive puppets, masks, and costumes. Mufasa is not the villain: that role belongs to his brother Scar. The stage adaptation expands the world of the film through African musical influences and songs such as “He Lives in You,” while retaining the family story at its center.
