In the Broadway musical The Book of Mormon, what religion do the missionaries represent?

The story behind the answer

In the Broadway musical The Book of Mormon, the missionaries represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The musical follows two young missionaries sent to Uganda: the earnest Elder Price and the less confident Elder Cunningham. The characters are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known in the show and in popular discussion as Mormon missionaries.

Trey Parker, Matt Stone, and Robert Lopez created the musical. Parker and Stone were known for South Park, while Lopez had co-created Avenue Q. The show uses satire to explore missionary work, belief, cultural misunderstanding, and friendship.

The title refers to the Book of Mormon, a sacred text of the church. The musical’s comic treatment does not make it a documentary about Uganda or church practice. Its fictional plot and intentionally exaggerated situations are part of its satirical style.
