In the Broadway musical Newsies, which newspaper do the newsboys strike against?

The story behind the answer

In the Broadway musical Newsies, the newsboys strike against The New York World.

Newsies dramatizes the 1899 newsboys’ strike in New York City. In the musical, publisher Joseph Pulitzer raises the wholesale price that newsboys must pay for bundles of newspapers, helping trigger their organized protest against The New York World and other papers. The story is inspired by real events, although the stage version heightens characters and relationships for dramatic effect.

The stage musical grew from the 1992 Disney film Newsies. Alan Menken composed the music, Jack Feldman wrote the lyrics, and Harvey Fierstein wrote the Broadway book. The Broadway production opened in 2012 at the Nederlander Theatre.

The title “Newsies” refers to the young newspaper sellers, not to a particular newspaper. The historical strike lasted roughly two weeks and ended when publishers agreed to buy back unsold papers, an arrangement the musical presents as a major victory.
