In the Broadway musical Miss Saigon, what is the name of the Vietnamese heroine?

The story behind the answer

Kim is the Vietnamese heroine of the Broadway musical Miss Saigon.

The story begins in Saigon during the final days of the Vietnam War. Kim, a young Vietnamese woman, meets Chris, an American Marine, while working at a nightclub. Their relationship is separated by the fall of Saigon, and the musical follows Kim’s efforts to reunite with Chris and protect their child.

Claude-Michel Schönberg composed the music, and Alain Boublil wrote the book and lyrics with Richard Maltby Jr. The musical was inspired partly by Giacomo Puccini’s opera Madama Butterfly, but it relocates the central cultural and political conflict to the Vietnam War.

Kim is sometimes confused with characters from other Schönberg and Boublil works, especially Éponine or Fantine from Les Misérables. Those characters belong to a different musical. Miss Saigon opened on Broadway in 1991 after its West End premiere.
