In the Broadway musical Fun Home, whose graphic memoir provided the source material?

The story behind the answer

Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir provided the source material for the Broadway musical Fun Home.

The musical adapts Bechdel’s 2006 memoir Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, which explores her childhood, her relationship with her father, and her coming out as a lesbian. The stage version uses multiple ages of Alison to present different periods of her life simultaneously.

Jeanine Tesori wrote the music and Lisa Kron wrote the book and lyrics. Fun Home opened on Broadway at the Circle in the Square Theatre on April 19, 2015, after an acclaimed off-Broadway production.

The show won the 2015 Tony Award for Best Musical, making it the first Broadway musical written by a woman to win that award. Its source is specifically a graphic memoir, not a conventional prose autobiography.
