In the Broadway musical Cabaret, what is the name of the Berlin nightclub?

The story behind the answer

In the Broadway musical Cabaret, the Berlin nightclub is called the Kit Kat Klub.

The Kit Kat Klub is the musical’s main performance space and a sharply stylized view of nightlife in Berlin during the early 1930s. The Emcee hosts the club’s numbers while the surrounding story follows the American writer Clifford Bradshaw and the performer Sally Bowles.

Cabaret opened on Broadway in 1966, with a score by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and a book by Joe Masteroff. It was adapted from Christopher Isherwood’s Berlin stories and the 1951 play I Am a Camera. The nightclub setting allows the musical to contrast entertainment with the rise of Nazism outside the club.

The spelling “Kit Kat Klub” is intentional in the stage musical. It is not the same as London’s Kit-Cat Club, a historical political and literary meeting place. The 1972 film adaptation also uses the nightclub as a central setting, but its production choices differ from those of the stage version.
