In the Broadway musical Annie, the orphan’s dog is named Sandy.
Sandy is a stray dog whom Annie adopts during the story. The dog becomes her loyal companion and is especially important because Annie’s search for her parents is central to the musical’s plot. Their relationship also gives Annie a source of comfort while she lives at the orphanage.
Annie is based on the newspaper comic strip Little Orphan Annie, created by Harold Gray in 1924. Thomas Meehan wrote the musical’s book, Charles Strouse composed the music, and Martin Charnin wrote the lyrics. The original Broadway production opened in 1977 at the Alvin Theatre, now known as the Neil Simon Theatre.
Sandy is sometimes mixed up with Toto, the dog from The Wizard of Oz, but the characters belong to different stories. Sandy is generally portrayed as a golden-colored mixed-breed dog, and the role has been played by trained dogs in stage and screen productions.
