The Book of Revelation calls the fiery destination of death, Hades, and evil powers the lake of fire.
The image appears in Revelation’s final judgment scenes. The beast and the false prophet are thrown into it, and later death and Hades are also cast into it. Revelation 20:14 calls this event “the second death,” linking the lake with final judgment rather than with ordinary physical death.
Christian interpretations differ over whether the lake of fire should be understood literally, symbolically, or in a combination of ways. Some readers identify it directly with hell, while others reserve “hell” for a broader collection of biblical and theological ideas about punishment after death.
The phrase is often confused with Gehenna, a separate New Testament term associated with judgment, and with the fiery imagery found in other biblical passages. Revelation’s distinctive wording is specifically “lake of fire.”
