In 'The Alchemist', what is the name of the king who helps Santiago?

The story behind the answer

In Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist, the king who helps Santiago is Melchizedek.

Melchizedek introduces himself as the king of Salem, an ancient city traditionally associated with Jerusalem. He meets Santiago early in the novel, after the shepherd has begun wondering whether he should pursue his recurring dream about treasure near the Egyptian pyramids.

The king encourages Santiago to follow his “Personal Legend,” Coelho’s term for a person’s true purpose or destiny. In exchange for part of Santiago’s flock, Melchizedek gives him advice about recognizing omens and remaining committed to his goal. He also gives Santiago two stones, Urim and Thummim, to help him interpret uncertain decisions.

A common mix-up is to identify the Alchemist himself as Santiago’s first supernatural guide. The Alchemist appears much later and teaches Santiago about transformation, courage, and the language of the world. Melchizedek’s role is different: he acts as the catalyst who persuades Santiago to leave shepherding behind and begin the journey.
