Arsenal played Coventry City in the opening match of the 2026–27 Premier League season and won 3–0.
The match took place at Emirates Stadium on Friday 21 August 2026. Arsenal entered the campaign as defending champions, while Coventry City had just returned to the top flight after a 25-year absence.
The fixture was unusual because the Premier League normally begins later in August. The 2026 start was delayed by one week because of the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup, whose final was played on 19 July. Arsenal therefore opened the season at home rather than beginning away from north London.
Coventry were one of three promoted teams in the 2026–27 Premier League, alongside Ipswich Town and Hull City. They should not be confused with the other newly promoted clubs: Ipswich began against Sunderland, while Hull opened at home to Manchester United. Arsenal’s victory also made them the first team to play in the new season.
