Defending champions Arsenal hosted Coventry City in the opening match of the 2026–27 Premier League season.
The fixture took place at Emirates Stadium on Friday 21 August 2026. Arsenal entered the campaign as champions after winning the previous Premier League season, while Coventry City had returned to the top flight after a 25-year absence.
The match was also notable because it paired the reigning champions with one of the newly promoted clubs. Coventry’s promotion restored a historic top-flight rivalry and gave the Sky Blues an immediate test against England’s title holders.
Arsenal won the match 3–0. The result meant the champions began their title defence with three points and a clean sheet, while Coventry started their return to the Premier League against the strongest possible opposition from the previous campaign.
