In the 2022 film Avatar: The Way of Water, the ocean-dwelling Na’vi clan on Pandora is the Metkayina.
The Metkayina live among the reefs and islands of Pandora and are led by Tonowari and Ronal. The Sully family seeks refuge with them after leaving the forest home of the Omaticaya. Much of the film’s story follows the Sully children as they learn Metkayina customs and adapt to aquatic life.
The Metkayina are distinguished by physical traits suited to swimming, including broader forearms and tails. Their culture is closely connected with marine creatures and reef environments.
The Omaticaya remain important to the Avatar series, but they are a forest clan rather than the reef community central to The Way of Water. The film expands Pandora beyond the rainforest landscapes emphasized in the first movie.
