In the 2016 "Brexit" referendum, the United Kingdom voted to leave which organization?

The story behind the answer

In the 2016 Brexit referendum, the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union.

The referendum took place on June 23, 2016, asking voters whether the UK should remain a member of the EU or leave it. The Leave side won with 51.89% of the vote, compared with 48.11% for Remain, on turnout of about 72%.

The result became known as Brexit, a blend of “British” and “exit.” It led Prime Minister David Cameron, who had supported remaining, to announce his resignation. The UK formally notified the EU of its intention to withdraw in 2017 and officially left on January 31, 2020.

The vote concerned membership in the European Union, a political and economic union of European countries. It did not mean leaving organizations such as NATO, the United Nations, or the Commonwealth. Scotland, Northern Ireland, London, and Gibraltar voted Remain overall, while England and Wales generally produced Leave majorities.
